About Mahmoud Zalt

Hi, I'm Mahmoud Zalt, a software engineer who enjoys mixing deep thinking with practical, real-world software that actually ships and helps people.

AI Strategist & Technical Advisor with 16+ years of experience. Open-source creator (Laradock 2M+ downloads), startup founder (Sista AI), and technical mentor. Expert in full-stack development, AI systems architecture, and technical leadership.

Professional Background

I spend most of my time designing and building production-grade software. Over the last few years, I've been shifting more towards AI work, which has been really exciting. What I love most is leading teams and products from start to finish, taking something from the initial roadmap and architecture all the way through to implementation and keeping it running smoothly. There's something really satisfying about that whole journey of turning an idea into something real that can actually scale.

Technical Specialization

My current specialization is AI systems and machine learning. I design and deploy production AI models, build intelligent agents, architect RAG applications, integrate AI capabilities into existing platforms, and develop AI-native applications. This work is built on a strong foundation of backend engineering and DevOps, complemented by frontend development and system design. I architect and operate cloud infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines that powers ultra scalable web, mobile, and desktop apps.

Open Source

Creator of Laradock.io (2M+ downloads), Apiato (modular API framework), and Porto SAP (modern software architecture).

Architecture Philosophy

I design systems around isolation, clear boundaries, and swappable parts. My go-to patterns are ports and adapters, plugin-based modules, and event-driven communication between services. I like architectures where adding a new capability means plugging in a new adapter, not rewriting existing logic. In practice, that means modular codebases where each feature is self-contained, cross-service coordination through event buses, and infrastructure defined as code so environments are reproducible and disposable. Whether it's a monolith with clean module boundaries or 20+ microservices behind a workflow engine, the goal is always the same: systems that are easy to reason about, extend, and operate at scale.

Startup Ventures

I've started and led a few different tech ventures throughout my career. Currently, I'm running Sista AI, which provides AI advisory services and builds AI products. On the services side, we help organizations with AI strategy, architecture, and governance, guiding them from pilot initiatives to scalable production systems. On the products side, we're exploring what's possible with AI and building things that integrate AI directly into people's workflows. I really enjoy building things that are practical and modern, solutions that genuinely make people's lives a bit easier.

Leadership

I believe in bringing people with different skills together and trusting them to do great work. My goal is to help everyone feel a sense of ownership and pride in what they're building. I try to make sure we're all moving in the same direction, balancing speed with making sure our technical work is always helping us meet the bigger goals.

Who I Am

My story and background.

Open-Source Initiatives

I've been fortunate to create a few open-source projects that have resonated with the developer community. I built Laradock.io (laradock.io), a virtual development environment that's been downloaded over 2.5 million times (Docker Hub); Apiato (apiato.io), a modular API framework; and Porto SAP (Porto SAP docs), a modern software architecture — along with other tools I've designed to help teams build software faster and more efficiently. It's been humbling to be recognized by Laravel Daily (article) as one of the top engineers to follow online.
